The lottery process for issuing H-1B visas has started again in the United States. The program was launched under the auspices of the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The USCIS said the move was aimed at temporarily giving foreign skilled workers job opportunities in the United States.

Joe Biden announced a change in visa policy under his predecessor, Donald Trump, after taking office as US president last February. This time the lottery process is starting again following that policy. This is expected to increase job opportunities for Indians in various fields in the United States, including information technology. This will be the second lottery to give foreign nationals the opportunity to work in America.

According to USCIS, the H-1B visa applications received so far on July 26 have been shortlisted. The second round of selection through lottery will start from August 2. It will continue till November 3.

The US Department of Homeland Security proposed a change in H-1B visa policy last year in the Covid situation. The then President Trump announced the cancellation of the lottery policy. Arguably, American citizens are not getting enough opportunities in the workplace because corporates hire people from abroad on low pay. Therefore, when recruiting people from abroad, ‘skills’ and ‘salary structure’ should be given priority this time. But as soon as Biden became president, he announced that he would change his decision. Incidentally, more than 60 percent of H-1B visa recipients in the United States each year are Indians.
